Brookline Water and Sewer Garage and Maintenance Facility, Brookline, MA
The Town of Brookline called upon CYMA 2 to renovate and reconfigure the Water & Sewer Department’s Netherlands Road facility to maximize its use. CYMA 2's initial design strategy made use of existing space at the facility, rather than adding onto a building already too large for its site, ultimately providing substantial cost savings to the town. The facility’s mezzanine level was extended to run the full length of the garage, allowing management offices and repair shops to move upstairs, providing more floor space for vehicle storage. A new elevator was installed to provide ADA accessibility for offices, restrooms, and a conference room, all located on the mezzanine level. The facility was equipped with card access for security and for monitoring fuel for town vehicles. An emergency electrical generator for backup power was also installed.
A new underground dual fuel tank and dispensing system was installed to service all maintenance vehicles. The fuel tank required a lengthy Conservation Commission review and public hearing process under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Riverfront Act of 1996. Careful space planning and technological improvements allow this public facility to efficiently serve town needs into the new century.
