Brookline Senior Center, Brookline, MA CYMA 2 submitted this proposal to a competition sponsored by the town of Brookline for a 20,000 square foot senior center. The design reduced the impact of the building mass substantially by locating the multi-purpose room and the classrooms below grade. Sunlight is introduced deep within the building with a sunken courtyard, stepped massing, clerestories, and glass block decks. A number of activities were combined into one area called the 'Hub,' which included a lounge, coffee bar, TV, card tables and library. The design enhances the rich variety of human interactions in the building with powerful and direct relationships to the sky and seasons of New England.
