The Arcade Building, Brookline, MA
Located at Coolidge Corner in the heart of Brookline, the Arcade is an original 1924 galleria containing storefront retail stores and interior retail and office spaces on two floors. By participating in the Preservation Tax Credit Program, the owner was able to undertake the restoration of this historic building. A prominent feature of the restoration is the skylight system, which brings filtered sunshine into the open space. Storefronts were remodeled to complement the original design as part of an overall facade restoration. As part of phase I of the project, the first floor main street entrance was made wheelchair-accessible by raising the sidewalk on a gentle slope to eliminate the step. Phase II of the restoration included accessible restrooms, an elevator to the second floor, and a new graphic treatment (see illustration) for the rear wall facing a public parking lot.
